Gallery Number Three

Update: Next open weekend at Gallery Number Three – Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April, 10am-6pm.

In association with the curators at Cumbrian arts organisation The Shining Tree, I’ve an exhibition at Gallery Number Three – War and Peace – which will preview on Friday 13 March, 2015. I’ll be exhibiting new paintings reflecting on my time as a photojournalist during the Bosnian war, 2015 is the 20th anniversary of the Genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia. I’ll also be exhibiting new Cumbrian landscape paintings. Also exhibiting, the superb Swedish photographer Andreas Palmén. This promises to be a strong show exploring, among other concepts, catharsis through art and the concept or ideas of conflict and peace. While my war paintings could be variously seen as difficult to view, or powerful, or gut-wrenching… one might ask if peace, whatever that means to you, can only be achieved through conflict. Conflict of course can mean a physical war, such as what happened in Bosnia, but it can equally apply to an internal conflict, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD.) Andreas Palmén’s photography is in complete contrast to my war paintings, yet complements my landscape paintings: he shoots the dramatic landscapes of Sweden and the people within, his imagery evoking a close relationship to a wilder nature.

Gallery Number Three is a new and independent pop-up gallery exhibiting contemporary Fine Art in Carlisle, Cumbria. The only one of its kind in the city, the pop up is located in the elegant town house and working studio of artist Derek Eland in a lovely and leafy part of Carlisle. There is ample parking nearby, and Carlisle train station is just a ten minute walk. Also nearby, The Halston Aparthotel, several excellent bars and eateries.

The exhibitions the gallery hosts support professional artists from a national and international scene, including artists based in Cumbria. The visitor can expect to see: painting, ceramics and sculpture, photography, works on paper and mixed media. The work is curated by a small, professional and friendly team – typically over two spacious rooms and hallway. As a pop up, exhibitions are held for two or three days and will allow you the opportunity to view and purchase work in relaxed surroundings.
